On the afternoon of Tuesday 7th December 2021, Year 11 at The Grove Academy were treated to a Q&A session with selected business volunteers.

Business volunteers from the law, hair & beauty, education, childcare, healthcare, finance, engineering and designing sectors were on hand to inspire the students & enhance their knowledge of their chosen fields. These industries were selected based on the 1:1 interview with Level 6 career advisors earlier this year. The enlightening session was led by Yasmin & with other members of the team on hand to assist.

Some excellent questions were asked by the students. They used this opportunity to probe the volunteers’ minds and experience in their respective fields.

The questions included the following:

“how did you start your career?”
“how difficult is it to change careers (during the pandemic and in general?)
“how to deal with team management?”

The range of answers from our business volunteers gave the students a firm grasp of what to expect in their selected industry moving forward. The type of skills required, obstacles they face and offering the best advice so the students can maximise their potential.

The Gatsby benchmarks met for this event were:

Personal guidance: 1:1 Meetings with a level 6 practitioner
Linking Curriculum learning to careers: The panel selected based on students 1:1 meetings and career aspirations
Encounters with employers & employees: The panel were from diverse sectors

Almost 80% of students stated this event improved their understanding of the workplace. Over 90% surveyed expressed this activity was beneficial in helping their future development.

Learning To Work in conjunction with business volunteers ensures the students are ready for the next phase in their careers. We thank our business volunteers, the students and everyone for helping organise a successful event.
